Emmie's digital publishing projects found in here

'Les yeux de Emmie', August 2022.

(Black and white portrait photography with colour graphic)

In English, the phrase ‘les yeux de Emmie’ means Emmie’s eyes, translated from French. This image is a representation of how I looked at my friends through the camera lens.

I captured this photo of my classmates Grace and Vanessa on campus on a gloomy day, so I used flash to brighten the subject and get the primary layer of this media text. After I transferred the photo to my computer, I started the editing process by entering Adobe Lightroom for lightning settings and changing the image’s colour. I chose the preset PB02 on the app to get the black-and-white filter and a vintage look for the photo, then I further adjusted some lightning options such as decreasing the exposure to pull the overall brightness down, adding grain to create more texture and reduce the vignette value to separate the background and help focusing on the subject. Next, I inserted the sunflower and the evil eye images respectively into Adobe Photoshop to crop the background out and layered the subjects on the background photo I edited previously. I duplicated each layer and placed it on the eyes of Grace and Vanessa and made it smaller to fit into the scale of their faces.

The reason I chose this image for my first part of the digital publishing is because initially, it records the fun time Grace, Vanessa and I as a group spent together at UTS College campus. Grace has a beautiful blue pair of eyes that reminds me of the evil eye in the picture, while Vanessa’s eyes are bright and wide open like the sunflowers. Although their eyes are replaced by the layers, we can still see the authentic happiness and playfulness through their witty facial expressions like Vanessa’s smile and their weird pose as well.

Rock 'n Roll, August 2022

For this composition, I used the photo I took of my sibling for our social media platform page as the first layer. I took the photo at late night time so I used the camera's internal flashlight to highlight the subject, however the exposure was a bit over so I imported the photo into Adobe Lightroom for lightning adjustment. My intention for using Lightroom is also to bring the focus to the subject I shot, so firstly, I applied the PE02 preset to give out an edgy look through the filter that represents the concept of the image, which is rock. The filter sharpens the details of the outfit and accentuates the red colour as it is one of the main pantone for this edgy concept. After that, I decreased the exposure of the photo to make the overall darker and create more contrast so the third layer, which is the phrase ‘Rock ‘n Roll’ will stand out. I also increased the grain value to add more texture to the picture and reduced the vignette to separate the subject from the background. Lastly, I used the app named Picsart on my phone to insert the phrase ‘Rock ‘n Roll’ in to clarify the concept that we are creating is rock.

My intention to make this poster is to create an impact on the fashion lovers, or affects. The shirt of a heavy metal band called ‘Metallica’ was chosen to match with a black leather pants, together with the red clutch and metal accessories becoming a combination to represent the soul of rock. However, I aim to inspire people to try different clothing materials but still follow the concept, hence, the puff jacket is highlighted in the image because it is not a common idea to wear this item for rock.

'E is for Ending', September 2022

(Videography with audio)

(The video was recorded and posted with the consent of all individuals’ involved.)

As I love vlogging, I chose to make a movie for the last part of the assignment. I used my mobile phone to record what my friends and I did on campus during the final class for this semester. After importing the footage into my computer, I used Adobe Premiere Pro to edit the videos and used voice memos on my phone to record my voice over. I also imported the music I downloaded from a website called ‘TrackTribe’ a while ago so that the song would be the background music, as well as searching for the other background music on another online platform, in which both of the songs are free from copyrights. I started the editing process by inserting all the media resources I had into Premiere Pro, then I trimmed the unwanted parts of each video and dragged them together in order to build a flow. There are some parts that I increased or decreased the speed in order to maintain the engagement of the content. Next, I edited the audio and the background music by trimming and increasing the volume of some clips as we did not talk loudly while recording, and I added some extra sound cards to improvise the audio section and help it become more interesting. The graphics, which are the texts, were placed into some parts of the video to further support the context of the media.

I wanted this to be part of my assignment because I want to display how much fun and enjoyment my peers and I had in this semester. The music I chose is jazz, which gives out a relaxing feeling and it is quite uplifting as well. The screen mostly shows the action of what people are doing in class at that moment, where it should be stressful and the video was shot from hidden angles because filming is usually not allowed during class time. Thank you Greg and my classmates for a wonderful study experience and allow me to post this video.
